Extended Day Fasting Experiment Day 3 – We Did It!

Well at 6:30 p.m. On May 17, 2017, Sarah and CJ finished there first 3 day fast.  It felt so good to achieve our goal and make it through our 3 days of fasting.

Why’d We Did This Anyway?

  1. We are both interested in using fasting as a method for weight loss and optimizing our health.
  2. We wanted the health benefits of fasting, which are numerous. For example increased HGH (Human Growth Hormone) production, increased insulin sensitivity, greater access to ketones and ketosis for burning body fat.
  3. Just because we wanted to see if we could do it.

How was Day 3?

Day 3 was actually fairly easy for me.  I had a really light version of my bulletproof coffee (coffee, butter and MCT oil), and two cups of spiced tea with a dash of cayenne pepper — delicious!  On day 3 I also felt a surge of energy later in the day.  We’d read and heard about people experiencing greater mental clarity, and a sense of euphoria with extended fasting – I don’t know what it was, I could have been excited about eating at 6:30 PM.

Did I have any difficulties while fasting for 3 days?

Not really.  As I mentioned I was hungry from time to time.  But to be perfectly transparent we’ve dipped our toes into the fasting pound several times with Alternate Day Fasting, where we fasted for 24 hour periods three days a week.  We did that for a month before we attempted this longer fast.  We’d also done a 36 hour fast previously, so we worked our way up to doing a 3 day fast.

The only issue I had was a brief one early on day 3 at around 1:00 A.M.  I got extremely cold to the point I was chivering, I got out of bed and was starving but I knew that I needed to eat something in the form of “fat.”  I wasn’t afraid when this happened by the way,  I was just “cold!” I got up and ate a tablespoon of butter which actually sounds gross to most (honestly it is an acquired taste – my daughter did it all the time as a toddler).  After I had the butter I also did a little salt under my tongue to make sure I had enough sodium and I went back to bed.  When I woke up I wasnt hungry at all, in fact I barely was hungry at all of day 3.

If anyone is interested in learning more about the benefits of fasting a good resource is a book called “The Complete Guide to Fasting” by Doctor Jason Fung and Jimmy Moore.

What did we do to end the fast?

We ate of course!!!   At 6:30 we ate some macadamia nuts just get our stomachs use to food again.  And at 7:30 we feasted!

Sarah made a delicious sausage, pepperoni, fat head Keto pizza, and we topped it off with a half of cub of Halo Top Peppermint Chip ice cream.
