Overcoming Disappointment through Perserverance
“Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.”
Newt Gingrich
So this weeks been a struggle. In my quest to lose 100 pounds it’s inevitable that I hit a week where I don’t lose weight–I hate scales! This was one of those weeks, and it’s thrown me off just a little, I’m disappointed but by no ways am I out of the game.
As with any journey you plan out your route, but sometimes there’s detours and obstacles that you don’t anticipate. When that happens you don’t turn around an go home and quit, no; you make course corrections, find a new route, etc. to get back on track.
I remember several years back while visiting my folks in Georgia, I decided to drive to Savannah GA. I had a map, but didn’t realize that it was out dated until a couple of hours later. When I realized I was on the wrong route I actually decided to turn around and go home–ok bad analogy. But my point is that just because I made that one mistake, or felt bummed out it didn’t stop me from taking other trips. I learned from that experience, made adjustments and moved on.
Trying to lose weight is just like any other goal, we set targets and sometimes we miss, sometimes we feel tired, but that’s when Perserverance is important. Here are three keys to continue your journey:
- Remember that set backs are normal and just part of the deal, it’s makes your victory sweeter.
- Remember your past success. We get too wrapped up in perceived failure and often forget our progress.
- Be willing to make adjustments if needed, this includes getting help from others. Or maybe doing some self analysis to uncover what might be really happening. Maybe you’re fudging your calorie numbers and cheating too often. Maybe nothing’s wrong and your body needed a break.
Remember that we are in this journey together. I’m trying to be as real as I can with you as I travel this road.
